How do we select estates to represent? First the wine. Then the people. Not much else. If the people are really nice and the wine is not great, then it doesn’t matter how nice the people are (even though that is often a hard and sad decision). If the wine is fabulous but the people are not, then it doesn’t matter how good the wine is. Sure we could sell it...but would we really want to?! We work only with really good wine and really good people.
While consumers seldom, if ever, get to know the personalities behind the wine, this is where it starts: with good people who make good wine for the right reasons - because they really, really want to make good wine; because they believe that wine is a beverage to complement a good meal; and because wine is not a trophy.
Who are we? I am Theresa Morrison. My business partner is also my husband, John Morrison. I am from Sedona, Arizona and moved to South Africa (long story) in 1985. John’s family is many generations from South Africa. We lived in Cape Town and had careers in finance and industry.
We thoroughly enjoy wine. So, in the late '90s, I married my passion for wine with my skills and experience and launched wine@34south. A couple of years later, John “retired” from his board room executive role to join me ... I was having fun. We moved to the Annapolis, MD in 2001 and established Boutique Vineyards soon thereafter ... and now both of us are having fun!
I give educational classes and seminars. I also wrote a book about South African wine regions - Cape Winelands. It is a visually stunning tour guide to, yes, select small estates in the main wine areas close to Cape Town.
Our efforts to bring stellar wines to the Mid-Atlantic are enhanced by the efforts of our sales rep, Larry Mitchell, and our broker in Montgomery County, Sue Diamond. Thanks guys!!
